The palace quarter in central Seoul is one morning. Bulguksa and Seokguram are a day out of Busan; the Jeju volcanic sites are a day on the island. These are the ranked three across the whole heritage stack, then the ways in.

Get through the palace gate at nine, wander Bukchon while the lanes are still empty, then leave the afternoon to Gwangjang and whatever is being fried in it. These three carry more travellers than anything else in the capital.
Guided palace, or just the ticket
The grounds are cheap to walk into and thin without somebody explaining the throne hall. Turn up in rented hanbok and the entry fee disappears, which is why half the courtyard is dressed for it.
Gwangjang, then Namdaemun
Mung-bean pancakes fried at the counter, raw beef with a yolk on it, and a knife-cut noodle stall that has been in the same family for decades. Go before six or queue behind the office crowd.
Namsan, and the way up it
The cable car runs from Myeongdong and the walk up takes about forty minutes. The view is the whole basin lighting up; the locks on the railings are somebody else’s idea.

Five Joseon palaces sit inside a half-hour walk of each other in central Seoul, and anyone in hanbok gets through the gates for nothing. Studios along the Gyeongbokgung wall hire by the hour with the hair done, which is how the courtyard fills with silk by eleven.

Guided history and mountain air are sold everywhere. A border you can look across, a pedal-powered train on an abandoned railway line, and a gorge that is only worth going to when it freezes solid are not.
The Demilitarized Zone
A four-kilometre strip runs the width of the peninsula, and civilian access is limited to a handful of controlled points: the third infiltration tunnel, the Dora observatory, and the station at Dorasan that has never carried a scheduled passenger north. Operators submit passport details ahead of the visit, a dress code applies, and the whole route closes without notice when access is suspended.

The Gapyeong Railbike
When the Gyeongchun line was rerouted, the old track was left in place and fitted with four-seat pedal carts. You freewheel through cuttings and a lit tunnel above the river, and a small electric train tows you back. Slots are timed and the last run leaves earlier than people expect.

Eobi Ice Valley
A shallow gorge an hour east of Seoul that spends most of the year as an unremarkable stream. Between January and late February it freezes into stacked blue ice against the rock walls, and the tours run. Arrive in March and there is nothing to look at.

Busan is a beach, a fish market and a temple on the rocks.
Two and a half hours from Seoul on the KTX and an entirely different country: a coastal train that runs on an old freight line, a hillside of painted houses at Gamcheon, and Haedong Yonggungsa built out over the water instead of up a mountain like every other temple in Korea.

Jangma, the summer rain band, parks itself over the peninsula through late June and July and drops most of the year’s water. January runs below freezing with a wind off the mainland. Both have the same answer: book the things that happen under a roof and keep the mountain days for spring and October.
